Improbable Water Stories

Canadian filmmaker Ashley Simpson had planned on traveling to India for the Kumbh Mela in 2013 since her first trip to India a few years before. What she didn’t and couldn’t plan on was that her journey would be preceded by her younger brother’s marriage to an Indian woman that she barely knew.
Now she isn’t the only one in her family traveling from Canada to India. Her role as a filmmaker is now changed in the context of new familial and cultural challenges.
Improbable Water Stories is a film about convergence. As three rivers meet on the most auspicious bathing date at the Kumbh Mela, human stories and lives also converge. Above the roar of 30 million pilgrims and the hypnotic flow of three rivers, a few tales emerge. A young romance strained by the misunderstandings of personal and cultural nuances, proclamations of a faith that are as learned and practiced as walking or talking, and curious cultural adoption and searching in the context and space of this largest gathering of souls on earth.
